Balance: Why It Matters, How to Improve It, and How our Steady & Strong Program Can Help
You probably don’t think about your balance very often—until you notice you’re feeling a little less steady than you used to.
Perhaps you’ve started reaching for the handrail more often, feel less confident walking on uneven ground, or avoid certain activities because they don’t feel as easy as they once did.
Balance is something we rely on every single day. It’s one of the most important physical abilities we have, and maintaining good balance plays a vital role in helping us stay active, confident and independent.
Why Is Good Balance So Important?
Good balance helps you move safely and confidently, whether you’re walking the dog, travelling, gardening, playing golf or keeping up with the grandchildren.
Falls are the leading cause of injury-related hospitalisation in older Australians, with around one in three people aged 65 years and over experiencing at least one fall each year.
However, balance isn’t just important as we get older.
Reduced balance can also affect people recovering from injury or surgery, living with neurological conditions, experiencing dizziness or inner ear problems, or anyone who has become less active over time.
The encouraging news is that balance can often be improved with the right assessment and a targeted exercise program.
What Affects Balance?
Balance depends on several body systems working together, including:
- Leg strength and muscle power
- Joint flexibility and mobility
- Vision
- Inner ear (vestibular) function
- Sensation in your feet and legs
- Your walking pattern
- Your brain’s ability to process all of this information together
When one or more of these systems isn’t working as well as it should, your balance can gradually decline.
Often these changes happen so slowly that people don’t notice until they experience a stumble, a near fall or a loss of confidence.
How Can You Improve Your Balance?
Research consistently shows that progressive balance and strength training is one of the most effective ways to improve balance, mobility and confidence.
The key word is progressive.
Exercises need to become gradually more challenging as your balance improves. That’s why an individualised program developed by a physiotherapist is far more effective than performing the same simple exercises week after week.
Introducing Our Steady & Strong Program
At North Balwyn Physiotherapy we’ve developed our Steady & Strong Balance & Stability Program to help active adults understand their balance, identify what’s limiting it and improve it with a personalised plan.
Our program follows a simple pathway:
1. Steady & Strong 20-Minute Balance & Stability Screen
This quick screening appointment provides an overview of your:
- Balance
- Walking and mobility
- Leg strength
- Important falls-risk factors
It’s an excellent first step if you’re unsure whether your balance has changed.
2. Comprehensive Balance & Stability Assessment
If further assessment is recommended, we’ll complete a detailed evaluation using recognised physiotherapy assessment tools to identify the specific factors affecting your balance.
Your assessment may include:
- Medical history and previous falls
- Medication review
- Standardised balance testing
- Walking and mobility assessment
- Leg strength and functional movement testing
- Balance confidence assessment
- Screening for factors such as dizziness or sensory changes where appropriate
3. Your Personal Balance Health Report
Following your assessment, you’ll receive your own Personal Balance Health Report.
Rather than simply telling you your balance is “good” or “poor”, we’ll identify the specific areas that are performing well and those that would benefit from improvement.
This provides a clear baseline and allows us to measure your progress throughout your program.
4. Your Personalised Steady & Strong Program
Every exercise program is individually tailored to your assessment findings and goals.
Depending on your needs, your program may include:
- Progressive balance retraining
- Functional strength exercises
- Walking and mobility training
- Stepping and reaction exercises
- Clinical Pilates to improve strength, core stability and movement control
- Home exercises designed specifically for you
5. Measuring Your Progress
One of the most rewarding parts of the program is seeing measurable improvement.
At the completion of your program we’ll repeat your assessment and compare your results, allowing you to see objective improvements in your balance, mobility, leg strength and confidence.
Who Should Consider a Balance Assessment?
Our Steady & Strong Program is ideal if you:
- Have experienced a fall or near fall
